Folklife Collection - Adoptees as a Folk Group

by Salisbury University Students (1994)

1 folder (0.1 linear feet)

In a series of interviews of local Eastern Shore residents in 1995, Salisbury University students and teachers collected folk life material. For this project, Lee M. Stanford chose to talk about adoption. In addition to his own input, the student interviewed two other students who were both adopted. In this paper, the student talks about how some families celebrate "coming home day" in addition to the biological birthday. He also addresses the stereotypical questions that adoptees would hear often such as "Do you love your parents?" Examples of questions the student asked during the interviews: how do you call the parents who raised you? Do you want to meet your birth parents? What questions would you ask them? How do you feel about being adopted? etc. Audiotape enclosed.
